We are blessed to share that our amazing son and hero, Adam Bush, is a thriving Ewings Sarcoma survivor! His cancer journey began in the Spring of 2021 when he was a senior in High School. He was on the high school Varsity Lacrosse Team that season and would share that he was having pain in his left arm from time to time. We all thought it was a muscle pull or something from his sport. He was a healthy and active young man; lifting weights and generally very athletic and fit, so we thought nothing of it for a couple months. He graduated in early June 2021 and then went on a grad trip with friends to Florida to enjoy the parks and to ride some coasters. Upon his return, he pointed out the swelling on his left shoulder and that his pain was back. We immediately went to urgent care and 3 days later upon the MRI results he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Needless to say, we were in total SHOCK!! This was a Friday and we had to wait until Monday for a biopsy to confirm the type of bone cancer and the severity. That was the longest and worst weekend of our life!
Within two weeks of high school graduation, our son (who had a COVID impacted senior year) was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in his left arm, had a port put in and chemotherapy started. He wasn’t off to college as planned and was told it best to take a medical gap year to fight the cancer. Oh what a year it was- 3 months of intensive chemo, surgery to move his left humerus (and the cancer), then 5 more months of chemo to ensure everything was gone!! Nine months later on March 11, 2022 he rang the bell, was cancer free and on the road to recovery with his new rebuilt titanium left humerus. He had an amazingly positive attitude and appreciation for all of his medical family through the journey! The Rare and Solid Tumor Team at Levine Children’s Cancer Center in Charlotte, NC were just tremendous!! We will be forever grateful for their support and expertise during this time.
He started at the University of South Carolina for engineering in August 2022 and will be graduating soon!! He has committed his free time to the American Cancer Society and the student chapter at Relay For Life as a Cancer Advocate Chair and Executive leader for 4 years now!! They are consistently the top 1 or 2 universities in the country for their fundraising efforts. We know we are blessed to see the other silver-lining side of this nightmare. We are committed to driving awareness of Childhood Cancer and the lack of funding and support for our kids!!! We need to be a loud voice and turn September as GOLD as we can!!!!
