Survivorship

For many childhood cancer survivors, finishing treatment is a huge milestone – and one to be celebrated. Being aware of possible long-term side effects, or late effects, from surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and other types of treatment can help survivors maintain optimal health. Members of your child’s healthcare team can provide you with a survivorship care plan, which is a comprehensive treatment summary and roadmap to help manage any late effects.

Please inquire about available survivorship programs in your area. Such programs are extremely beneficial for maintaining optimal health after treatment. In Atlanta, the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center offers long-term specialized care to help childhood cancer survivors through its Cancer Survivor Program.

Talk with your treatment team about the emotions you are feeling. For many survivors and families, the transition to survivorship care can be exciting but also overwhelming. Recognize that fears and anxieties are a normal part of the healing process. Many families find that mental or emotional support can be helpful during this time. CURE’s Counseling Program is available throughout your child’s survivorship, and we are here to continue supporting your family for the long term.
