Reese's Fund

Reese’s Fund at CURE is established to support research for solid tumors and to thank the team of oncologists who saved Reese’s life. At just 10 months old, Reese was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma, a germ cell tumor at the base of her spine. She immediately began chemotherapy at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Though not yet able to walk or talk, she showed remarkable strength and resilience. During months of inpatient treatment, Reese radiated joy, bringing smiles to her doctors and nurses each time they entered her room.

After surgery in December 2016, Reese and her family received the best news just a month later: “no residual signs of tumor.” Today, at 10 years old, she is thriving, playing soccer and guitar and starring in her school play, all while continuing with her yearly survivorship checkups.

Our Impact: Solid Tumor Research & the MaGIC Consortium

Reese’s parents, Jenn and Grant Rivera, thought, “How do you thank the people who saved your child’s life?” This fund is their quest to do just that.

Reese’s Fund at CURE is an extension of the work created originally as Reese’s MaGIC Fund. It was created to honor the doctors who cared for Reese and to support the work of her medical team, including Dr. Thomas Olson and Dr. Megan Durham. In 2016, Dr. Olson established the Malignant Germ Cell International Consortium (MaGIC), a group of 32 physicians from nine countries dedicated to advancing the treatment of germ cell tumors. This team collaborated on Reese’s treatment protocol with Dr. Olson, and their recommendations proved successful in her battle.

Since its inception, Reese’s MaGIC Fund has raised over $713,000 to support solid tumor research through the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the MaGIC Consortium’s efforts. The Consortium has successfully targeted treatments and opened three new clinical trials internationally, bringing hope to countless families.

Every year, Reese’s family hosts the Ring the Bell Benefit. This event is all about family, fun, and community. The name “Ring the Bell” carries powerful meaning. When children finish cancer treatment, they ring a bell to mark their victory. The Ring the Bell Benefit reminds us why we gather: to celebrate victories, encourage those still fighting, and honor the memory of children who continue to inspire us.
