Carlos S. Alvarado, MD Pediatric Cancer Research Fund

In 2011, our annual CURE Challenge resulted in a new research fund named in honor of Dr. Carlos Alvarado, a dedicated pediatric oncologist who retired in 2009 after nearly three decades of service at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Alvarado cared for children with cancer skillfully and compassionately, while also making incredible strides in the search for a cure through his research. The Carlos S. Alvarado fund will continue to move his work forward by funding lifesaving research at the Aflac Cancer Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

About Dr. Alvarado

Dr. Carlos S. Alvarado received his medical education at San Marcos University School of Medicine in Lima, Peru, his post-graduate training in pediatrics at the University of Connecticut Health Center, in Hartford, Connecticut, and his hematology/oncology training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He joined the Emory pediatric hematology/oncology program in 1981 and has been actively involved in the education of students, residents and fellows throughout his career.

His medical accomplishments include developing special expertise in bone marrow failure syndromes, histiocyte-related disorders, and some of the childhood solid tumors. He has also actively participated in the Infant Leukemia and Neuroblastoma studies (as Study chair or Co-chair) of the Pediatric Oncology Group.

In the late stages of his career, he worked with the Division’s Scientists on research aimed at defining the role of oncogenes and anti-apoptotic proteins in inducing drug resistance in neuroblastoma.

Dr. Carlos S. Alvarado has been a longtime member of the CURE Board of Directors, joining the Advisory Board in 2000.

Currently Dr. Carlos S. Alvarado is Professor Emeritus at the Emory Department of Pediatrics. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with wife Luisa, two children, Beatriz and Carlos Jr. and two grandchildren, Gwyneth and Adriana.

“Dr. Alvarado’s gentleness, compassion, and love for the children with cancer, including our son, were ever present. He was always there for Paul and our family.”
